Communal bin review

Phase 5 World Heritage Site

This area is a World Heritage Site so we have engaged with various heritage bodies and together have agreed the following changes to reduce the visual impact of bin hubs:

  • A dark green lid will be used for the mixed recycling bins.
  • The standard glass recycling bin lid is entirely purple but within the World Heritage Site this will be mostly black with a purple flap.
  • The standard metal bars at each end of the bin hub are usually chrome but we have sourced and purchased a bespoke black metal design for these bin hubs.

Engagement

In May, we sent letters to around 2,800 residential properties and 450 businesses with information on the proposed bin hub locations. Posters were added to lampposts in 38 streets to promote the engagement period.

Briefing sessions were held for ward councillors, transport and environment committee members, Community Councils, heritage groups and other associated organisations.

The engagement period was open for comments between 6 and 26 May 2024 and saw the project team arrange several information sessions for residents.

Information sessions

The project team held sessions for residents to stop by and chat about the proposed bin hub locations. The sessions were held at various times to allow as many residents as possible the opportunity to meet with the team. Paper copies of the plans were available along with information on using the bins and copies of the recycling guide.

Feedback

We asked to hear from residents and business owners by 26 May 2024 with their comments and feedback about the proposed bin hub locations. We received around 70 comments about the proposed bin hub locations.

Next steps

We are currently reviewing all comments and feedback to ensure the final bin hub locations reflect, where possible, suggestions and/or concerns raised during the engagement period.

We will respond to all residents and business owners who have contacted us during the engagement period and expect to start doing this late June.
