Annual leave and public holidays
Local Government employees
The new holiday year starts on 1 October. The annual leave entitlement for full time employees working a standard 36 hour week is:
- 27 days (194.4 hours) plus 6 public holidays (43.2 hours) - if you have less than five years' continuous service at the start of the leave year.
- 32 days (230.4 hours) plus 6 public holidays - after five years' but less than 10 years' continuous service at the start of the leave year.
- 35 days (252.0 hours) plus 6 public holidays (43.2 hours) - after 10 years' continuous City of Edinburgh Council service at the start of the leave year.
Part-time employees
Annual leave entitlement will be pro-rated based on the hours stated above.
Public holidays
There are six days fixed public holidays
- Christmas day and Boxing day
- New Year's day and 2 January
- Good Friday and Easter Monday.
If Christmas, Boxing or New Year's day or January 2 is a Saturday or Sunday, then Monday or Tuesday would be classed as official public holidays for staff who are contracted to work Monday to Friday.
Employees whose rostered shifts can occur on any day would still have Christmas day, Boxing day or New Year's day as the public holiday and would get enhanced pay if working. If you're rostered to be off, your manager will designate an alternate working day as the public holiday.
Shift workers, part time and compressed hours
Public holiday allocation will be calculated and entered by your manager.
Local arrangements
Some employees continue to swap Good Friday for 3 January if this arrangement was in place before Modernising Pay was implemented.
