Save the WHEC Young Mum's Unit and Creche - Petitions (Invalid)
Petition details
The council are looking to shut down the young mums unit and creche.
The services it provides are essential helping young mothers get back into education, providing vital support ,to try and provide a better future for them an their little ones.
Service Provided:
Transport by taxi to and from school, for girls outwith the Wester Hailes’ catchment area.
A crèche for babies and toddlers.
Timetabled classes within the main school.
A well-equipped classroom near the crèche where girls can study and meet other young mums
A full-time teacher allocated to the Young Mums’ Unit, who provides study support, tailor-made sessions and links with outside agencies
a pupil support worker who provides additional support for the young parents
Over the years it has provided great support for girls to meet other young mums,whilst being able to be in school, being able to visit their baby or toddler in the crèche during lunch or break giving peace of mind. The council has advised these girls to go back to their regular high schools if they want education, where there is little or no support for the girls themselves in respect to being mothers and no place for their babies to go. It's not easy to get a full time free nursery place, some of the girls may not have their families support and even if they do have their support their families have to work too.
