Description of the group
Edinburgh Printmakers is a creative centre for printmaking and the visual arts in the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh. It has a large light-filled printmaking studio, two galleries, a shop selling original prints and handmade products, a venue for meetings, events and learning activities, a café, a courtyard, and community garden. The printmaking studio welcomes anyone interested in joining our courses or becoming a member. It was established in 1967 as the first open-access studio in the UK and is one of the largest in Europe. Set in Castle Mills, a beautiful heritage building that was formerly a rubber factory and brewery complex, Edinburgh Printmakers fosters a creative atmosphere for both the local community and visitors to enjoy. The Edinburgh Printmakers permanent art collection holds a wide range of prints created in our studio by members and invited artists since we opened our doors in 1967. We also maintain an archive of posters, exhibition catalogues, and other printed ephemera related to our programmes and exhibitions. When possible, we retain plates, blocks and sketches relating to the creation of our editions. EP is currently also delivering a heritage project called Castle Mills: Then & Now, aimed at researching, celebrating and sharing the cultural, built, social and intangible heritage connected to the Castle Mills building, history of printmaking in Scotland and broader Fountainbridge industrial past. Edinburgh Printmakers holds a shared heritage as a members organisation of 57 years - and the first open access print studio in Britain - in addition to becoming a custodian of a Grade C listed industrial building where thousands of local people worked since 1836, during its time as headquarters of the North British Rubber Company and later Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Ltd.
