Disabled person property based Council Tax discount
You may be able to get a reduction on your Council Tax bill if you, or an adult or child living with you, is permanently disabled.
This is a property based reduction, for a property that has been adapted or had changes made that are essential and of major importance in the day to day living of the person with a disability.
The Council Tax team will arrange a home visit to verify this request.
Who can apply
Your home must have one of the features below, and it must be of vital or major importance to the disabled person's wellbeing
- an extra kitchen or bathroom for the specific needs of the disabled person
- an extra room, not a bathroom, kitchen or toilet, that is mainly used by the disabled person and is required to meet their additional needs. Please note that the bedroom the disabled person sleeps in would not be considered as being an extra room within the property
- enough space for the disabled person to use a wheelchair within the dwelling which includes sufficient floor space to permit this use. If the wheenchair is only used out-with the dwelling no entitlement to this reduction can be considered
The extra room or space for wheelchair use must be of major importance to the disabled person's well being. This means that without this room or space, the disabled person would either
- their health would suffer
- the disability would be likely to become more severe
- find it physically impossible or extremely difficult to live in the dwelling.
How much the reduction is
The reduction is made by charging Council Tax at the valuation band below the one your home is in. So, if your home is in band D, the band C rate will apply to your Council Tax bill. You will get a part reduction even if your home is in band A.
This reduction applies to your Council Tax, water and sewerage charges.
