Where to find electric vehicle charging points
There are electric vehicle charging points across the city run by ourselves and other organisations. Our charging points are part of the ChargePlace Scotland network.
Check charge point locations, type, charging costs and availability on ChargePlace Scotland's website.
You can also check other organisations’ charging point locations, types, charging costs and availability on the ZapMap website.
We run three types of charging points:
- 7kW standard
- Standard chargers are ideal for charging vehicles when they can be left for longer periods. This might be in residential areas for people who do not have off-street parking or for commuters at Park and Ride sites.
- Our 7kW standard chargers have a Type 2 socket and you will need to use your own cable.
- 22kW fast
- Fast chargers are ideal for when a vehicle needs a substantial charge for up to 3 hours. This might be in residential areas for people who do not have off-street parking or close to shops and services.
- Our 22kW fast chargers have a Type 2 socket and you will need to use your own cable.
- 50kW rapid
- Rapid chargers are ideal when a vehicle needs a substantial charge quickly, often in a busy part of the city.
- Our 50kW rapid chargers have three cables: CCS, CHAdeMO and Type 2. You should avoid using the Type 2 cable as you will receive a limited amount of charge within the maximum stay period for a 50kW rapid charger.
How we have chosen charger locations
Connecting EV chargers to the electricity grid is the most expensive part of installing new chargers. So it is more cost effective to maximise the number of chargers in one location.
We have created several charging hubs, prioritising areas where residents do not have off-street parking. We have also chosen locations where the chargers will be accessible to everyone using electric vehicles.
Lamp post charging
We do not intend to use lamp posts as charging points.
Most of the new or refurbished lamp posts in Edinburgh, and Scotland, are at the back of pavements and paths. These are not suitable because
- they cannot fit the equipment needed for chargers
- they would create a trip hazard because of trailing cables.
