Emergency flood response

Port of Leith

At the lower end of the Water of Leith catchment is the Port of Leith, currently maintained by Forth Ports. Forth Ports have a statutory requirement to maintain a steady water level within the dock to facilitate shipping movements. This is achieved by controlling water levels using a sluice gate and valves, and Forth Ports access the Council’s river telemetry data to assist with this.

The Water of Leith Flood Protection scheme takes into account the maintained dock water level, but the port does not play any part in the Flood Protection scheme.
