One of the highlights of this year’s Edinburgh’s Gaelic Festival will be a virtual ceilidh showcasing the talent of young people in the Capital’s Gaelic community.
Seachdain na Gàidhlig is a city-wide festival celebrating the Gaelic community, past and present, and the rich, but often overlooked, history of Gaelic in Edinburgh.
The event, running from Friday 6 November until Friday 13 November, is taking place online and is co-sponsored by the City of Edinburgh Council and the University of Edinburgh.
The festival began as part of the University of Edinburgh’s initial Gaelic Language Plan in 2014. Since then it has been organised by volunteers from across the city’s Gaelic community and is chaired by the University of Edinburgh’s Gaelic Officer.
Councillor Alison Dickie, Gaelic Champion for the City of Edinburgh Council, said:
We’re delighted to be co-sponsoring the festival as it reinforces our commitment to developing Gaelic in Scotland’s capital city.
We have worked collaboratively with the Gaelic community to produce our second Gaelic Language Plan, alongside a long-term strategy for the development of Gaelic medium education in the city. We have increased our teaching workforce, including additional needs support, and our Corporate Gaelic Development Officer is working alongside partners to create career pathways and opportunities.”
Bria Mason, the University of Edinburgh’s Gaelic Officer, said:
Our eighth annual festival will take place online this year, but I’m thrilled we still have such a strong programme of events.
Despite this year’s challenges, the University has published its second Gaelic Language Plan, created online video resources and held numerous virtual events for our students, staff and the wider community.
The University, the Council, and the festival's committee and partners have all helped ensure we can look forward to another year of high-quality events for all, this time accessible globally.”
