Statement from Council Leader Cammy Day following the motion 'Europe Day – Celebrating Edinburgh’s European Identity' which was approved recently by Council.
Council Leader Cammy Day said:
I am incredibly proud of the long-established relationship with continental Europe that Edinburgh has enjoyed over hundreds of years. Whether to visit, or begin a new life through study or work, the Athens of the North has been a draw for many thousands of Europeans from all walks of life.
In the past year we have been focussing on supporting Ukrainians in Edinburgh fleeing Russia’s illegal war, which has shattered peace and stability on the continent. We continue to stand in solidarity with Ukraine and Ukrainians.
Edinburgh has also attended the annual EUROCITIES conference over many years, including hosting the event in 2018. Earlier this year I was delighted to take part in the EUROCITIES #EUFoodCities digital campaign, showcasing the excellent work on urban food policies in cities across Europe. Our Lord Provost Robert Aldridge will be attending this year’s conference in Brussels and representing the city. In recent years we have also proactively contacted a number of international partner cities and diplomats to express our concerns over human right issues.
Looking ahead I am pleased to confirm that to coincide with Europe Day on 5 May 2024. the Council will host a civic celebration of Edinburgh’s European identity, with the Council of Europe flag flying proudly above the City Chambers. This event will be promoted to our 40 consular corps within Edinburgh and to our Edinburgh International Group partners. I hope that events will continue annually to reaffirm and reinforce Edinburgh’s commitment to our European partners. These will also be a chance to celebrate the ideals of fairness, equality and human rights which unite us all.
We pride ourselves on being a diverse, cosmopolitan, and forward-thinking capital city, and our European visitors and residents make a tangible contribution to Edinburgh’s cultural and social fabric. We will always warmly welcome our European friends to Edinburgh.
