Statement from the Council Leader on public demonstrations

Council Leader Cammy Day gives a statement on public demonstrations and urges organisers to get in touch.

Council Leader Cammy Day said:

The City of Edinburgh Council supports the fundamental right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, as outlined in the European Convention on Human Rights.

Whilst there is a statutory requirement of 28 days’ notice for marches and parades to be held, we are able to waive this for demonstrations reacting to fast-paced global events.

Our teams along with our event partners are highly experienced in facilitating demonstrations. I’d urge any organisers to contact the Council as soon as possible so we can work together to plan your demonstration in a safe, organised and efficient manner.

We encourage organisers of any demonstrations to get in touch with us as soon as possible directing any enquiries to either our licensing licensing@edinburgh.gov.uk or public safety teams publicsafety@edinburgh.gov.uk

Following notification we will help you plan your protest to ensure we can resource and facilitate it to ensure the safety of all participants.
