Fields in Trust aims to protect parks and green spaces so that future generations will be able to enjoy them.
Protection is given through a legal document known as a “Minute of Agreement” between Fields in Trust and a space's landowner. It will be retained for use as a green space, usually a public park, playing field or recreation ground, in perpetuity. This agreement sets out what the landowner can and can’t do with a space, without needing to consult Fields in Trust.
As part of its commitment to improving and protecting its public parks and green spaces, the City of Edinburgh Council is working to increase the number of green spaces protected by Fields in Trust Minutes of Agreement to 61.
This means that almost everyone in the city will live no more than a ten-minute walk from a park or green space which is protected for good. The City of Edinburgh Council is the first local authority in Scotland with such a vision of its green spaces.
