West Edinburgh development study
Towards West Edinburgh 2050 is a study to help inform future policy and delivery plans for the development of West Edinburgh.
The study has been commissioned by us in partnership with the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, and the Scottish Futures Trust. It was produced by AECOM, Collective Architecture, and Rettie.
Towards West Edinburgh 2050 sets out information, ambitions, opportunities, and principles that can support the preparation of policy documents and spatial strategies for West Edinburgh, including the successor to City Plan 2030 and future iterations of the West Edinburgh Transport Improvements Programme.

- summary of barriers to inclusive growth in West Edinburgh
- description of character areas and opportunities in West Edinburgh
- review of activity already underway
- vision for West Edinburgh
As well as
- guiding principles for the future development of West Edinburgh
- opportunities in West Edinburgh, aligned to five interconnecting themes: environment and climate change; economic growth; connectivity; resilient and sustainable places; and tackling inequality
- an overview of lessons that can be learned from other cities and potential next steps and a timeline for these.

Towards West Edinburgh 2050 was presented to the Council's Planning Committee on 11 September 2024.
