Rail travel for people with disabilities

Travel by train

If you have a disability and travel by train, you can go online and apply for a disabled persons railcard. It could help you save one third off your train fare. If you are over 60 you can apply online for a senior railcard.

You can find more information at your local station or call 08456 48 49 50.

You can find out about access to stations or train times and prices from National Rail enquiries.  They also have further information regarding discounts for disabled people who do not hold a disabled persons railcard.

If you have a hearing impairment you can textphone 0845 60 50 600.

Taxicards – free rail travel

Thanks to a special deal between ScotRail and the City of Edinburgh Council, you can travel on trains within the Lothian area for free. If you are travelling from a station with ticket barriers, you’ll need to show your valid Taxicard to the gateline staff. Otherwise just board your train and show it to the ticket inspector.

Download information on applicable stations and terms of use in our Taxicard free rail travel leaflet  (PDF 55 KB)

You can use your Taxicard on the new Borders Railway up to Gorebridge only, if you want to travel to Stow, Galashiels or Tweedbank you would have to pay the difference to these stations.
