Road and pavement resurfacing

Charlotte Square and Charlotte Street

We are resurfacing the roads at Charlotte Square and North and South Charlotte Street from 16 October 2023 for around 15 weeks. This will include improving drainage.

We will carry out the work in phases and will use information signs to advise dates and locations of traffic restrictions.

We expect work to end in March 2024.

This is part of a wider plan to improve the public spaces in Charlotte Square and to link the City Centre West to East Link to George Street. Read more about the wider improvements planned for Charlotte Square.

Phase 1

16 October to 3 November 2023

We have completed the work at the junctions of North Charlotte Street with St Colme Street and we are currently working on the South Charlotte Street with Princes Street junction. There was a slight delay due to the wet weather and our contractor will work this weekend, 18 and 19 November, during the day to complete this work.

Phase 2

6 to 23 November 2023

The north side of Charlotte Square will be resurfaced during the day under a road closure. Access to Glenfinlas Street will be maintained.

Phase 3

8 January to 22 March 2024

North Charlotte Street, South Charlotte Street and the east side of Charlotte Square will be resurfaced during the day under lane closures.

Right-turn restrictions will be in place for Charlotte Square and George Street respectively.

The two remaining sides of Charlotte Square (south and west) will be resurfaced during the day under road closures. Traffic diversions for the affected streets will be in place.

Edinburgh's Christmas embargo

23 November 2023 to 8 January 2024

During this period, work will stop to allow for Edinburgh’s Christmas events.

Access

Throughout the work pedestrians will be able to access all streets and emergency vehicles will have access at all times.

Parking restrictions will apply and will be marked with yellow traffic cones and yellow signs.

Night work

We have consulted with the road authorities, emergency services and bus operators and it has been agreed that due to the strategic location of the works and to ensure safety of motorists and the workforce, it was necessary carry out phase 1 at night under road closures.

We know this is disruptive for local residents and apologise for this. We will keep noise to a minimum by making sure that the  noisest operations, such as the use of mechanical breakers, planing machines or thermal lances, are not permitted after 11pm. After this time, we will use road pavers, rollers, mechanical sweepers and trucks.

Contact

Throughout the work, a council representative will monitor progress and provide assistance and information to local residents and businesses. If you have any issues, you can also email transport.designservice@edinburgh.gov.uk
