Additional Traffic Management Arrangements as of 11 April

Please find below a summary of additional traffic management arrangements to accommodate site investigations works and utility diversions outside the main area of works.

LOCALISED WORK SITES

Main construction works for the project are scheduled to be completed during 2022. There will be a requirement to undertake localised works at times on carriageways and footways to install equipment to support the new tram line, as well as new street furniture. Localised traffic management and pedestrian diversions will be in place as required with any changes being communicated in advance.

YORK PLACE TO LONDON ROAD

York Place

The decommissioning and removal of the temporary York Place tram stop has been completed ahead of schedule, allowing Edinburgh Trams to resume services in the city centre earlier than expected. Track works to connect to the existing tram line across the Broughton Street / Picardy Lane junction now complete. Work on the creation of the tram stop at Picardy Place will then commence.

Update Picardy Place / Broughton Street junction: the junction will be closed for one day from 12 April 9am to 13 April 5am. This is to allow the lining and surfacing of the junction ahead of its reopening on 15 April.

While these works are ongoing:

No left exit from Broughton Street onto Picardy Place
Signposted vehicle diversions in place via Abercromby Street, Albany Street and East London Street and/or London Road, Regent Road and South St David Street
No through access along the front of the buildings at Picardy Place and Antigua Street
Pedestrian access maintained along adjacent footpaths

Traffic travelling east from York Place to Picardy Place will be re-instated from 5.00am on Wednesday 13 April 2022. In addition, traffic will be able to exit Broughton Street turning left onto Picardy Place.

On Friday 15 April 2022, the construction site will be amended to allow traffic to travel from Picardy Place heading north down Broughton Street. View the traffic management arrangements as of 15 April

Please note that a delivery of tram rails is expected to site on Friday 15 April 2022. One of the lanes on York Place heading east will be temporarily closed to accommodate this delivery. This will be undertaken during off-peak hours.

London Road

From week commencing 18 April 2022 there will be adjustments to the traffic management arrangements at London Road to progress tram infrastructure works. View the traffic management plans

LEITH WALK

Leith Walk - Cycleway Closure

Localised works will be ongoing on the cycle lane on the west side of Leith Walk. As a result, the cycle lane remains closed. Localised diversion routes remain in place until completion.

Elm Row & Montgomery Street: Works commenced in January 2022. A temporary bus stop has been established, located just off Elm Row. Visit Lothian Buses for further information.

Site lines have been extended at Montgomery Street to accommodate the installation of drainage pipes with wider public realm works ongoing.

Gayfield Square

We have temporarily re-instated the one way system at Gayfield Square until works at York Place to London road have progressed enough to allow the completion of the section from London Road to Annandale Street.

Leith Walk - east side

From 2 February traffic management was moved to the new road surface on the west side from Jane Street to London Road. The main diversion routes for phase 2 of Leith Walk works are via Easter Road / Bonnington Road.

Albert Street update: Scottish Water works are continuing. The traffic management arrangements have been changed which now allows traffic to travel in both directions.

Balfour Junction update: Balfour Street junction is now open to traffic, allowing a right turn from Leith Walk into Balfour Street and a right turn from Balfour Street onto Leith Walk. Works to re-close the entrance to Cambridge Avenue from Pilrig Street are still to be undertaken and further details will be available in due course.

Arthur Street update: Arthur Street junction is now open to traffic.

Pilrig Street is reopened with access/egress reintroduced heading south.

Iona Street and Lorne Street are closed at their junctions with Leith Walk with diversions in place:

Springfield Street is now open to city bound traffic.

Waiting areas: waiting areas for customers of businesses on Leith Walk have been created at Iona Street and Pilrig Street. Further waiting spaces are available on the west side of Leith Walk north of Annandale Street, Pilrig Street and south of Springfield Street.

Lorne Street

The site fence line on Leith Walk at Lorne Street were extended on w/c 4 April to accommodate works in the area. Parking restrictions and a pedestrian diversion are in place. Expected duration is four weeks.

Manderston Street to Foot of the Walk

Traffic management arrangements at the Foot of the Walk changed over the weekend of 9/10 April 2022.
From Manderston Street down to Kirk Street, the running lane has moved to the west side of the street to allow further works on the east side of Leith Walk to commence.

As a result of these changes:

The junctions of Manderston Street and Leith Walk and Crown Place and Leith Walk will be closed with enforcement of parking restrictions in place.
There will be no left hand turn from Kirk Street heading north. Vehicles will only be able to turn right heading south on Leith Walk.
The bus stop at the foot of the walk will move into the centre of the street. Details of any bus diversions can be found at lothianbuses.com.
Traffic movements between Great Junction Street and Duke Street heading both ways will remain under two-way traffic management.

FOOT OF THE WALK TO OCEAN DRIVE

Laurie Street to Coatfield Lane

Access to and from Coatfield Lane for local access only is via Laurie Street and Constitution Street on a 2 way temporary traffic light control for north and south bound traffic.

On the weekend of the 12 March traffic management arrangements between Laurie Street and Coatfield Lane moved to the east side of Constitution Street.

Coatfield Lane to Queen Charlotte Street

UPDATE: The junction with Queen Charlotte Street and Constitution Street will close to east and west bound traffic week commencing 18 April with a scheduled completion of Autumn 2022.

In order to maintain traffic flow in the area, Maritime Street will open at the junction of Bernard Street (by Café Marmalade) one way heading south. Parking restrictions will be in place on Maritime Street to facilitate the diversion.
Diversion routes will be clearly signed for all traffic including cyclists, however cyclists can use the option of walking bicycles through the pedestrian routes.

Constitution Street - Constitution Place to Tower Street

This section has opened to traffic travelling in both directions from Baltic Street through to Ocean Drive at Rennie’s Isle/Victoria Bridge. There will be no parking, loading or stopping.

Tower Street:

In January 2022 the site was extended to the north side of the carriage way to facilitate the next phase of the attenuation pipes/drainage system works. Access to Tower Street from Constitution Street remains closed with local access being maintained for residential private parking. Parking restrictions also remain in place on Tower Street. Parking on the Shore has been reinstated up to the corner of the Shore/Tower Street.

OCEAN DRIVE TO NEWHAVEN

Stevedore Place

UPDATE: To progress with associated tram works, traffic management arrangements at Ocead Drive/Stevedore Place will be adjusted. Pedestrian access will be maintained with diversions in place. Read more and view the traffic management plans.

Landscaping works started in late March and require localised traffic management on the carriageway.

Rennie’s Isle to Tower Place

Works are ongoing between Rennie’s Isle and Tower Place and the road remains closed. These works are scheduled to be completed by Autumn 2022. Vehicle access to Tower Place, Forth Ports, Stevedore Place, Constitution Place and Tower Street Industrial Estate will be via Commercial Street / Bernard Street, and onto Constitution Street. Vehicle access to the Cala Development and the entrance to Rennie’s Isle from the west is provided via Ocean Terminal on Ocean Drive.

Localised access to the Queens Quay Developments remains in place. A pedestrian diversion will be in place via Tower Place and the Victoria Swing Bridge for pedestrians travelling east and west. Additionally, as part of this site establishment Tower Bridge will be closed to pedestrians to allow structural works to be undertaken.

UPDATE: Over the weekend of 9 / 10 April 2022 we will be making changes to the traffic management arrangements on Tower Place to accommodate main infrastructure works in the area and improve pedestrian movements.

FOOTWAY WORKS

Picardy Place

The crossing point at Picardy Place, near Edinburgh Playhouse, moved further north on w/c 7 March 22. This is to progress main infrastructure works in the area.

Elm Row

The first phase of hard landscaping works from Montgomery Street moving south commenced on Monday 28 February 2022 and is near completion. Further footway works have commenced on Elm Row with affected properties directly notified. Access to properties will be maintained.

Leith Walk west side

The majority of construction works on the west side are now complete from London Road to Jane Street.

Leith Walk – east side at 165a Leith Walk

From Wednesday 13 April 2022 site lines will be extended towards properties to accommodate Scottish Power connections to the newly built substation. Works are expected to take approximately 3 weeks. Pedestrian access will be maintained. Find out more.

Constitution Street at Laurie Street - Footpath Closure

The footway on the west side between Foot of the Walk and Laurie Street is currently closed. Pedestrian access is maintained on the east side.

Please note there may be a requirement to close this footway in the coming month to progress tram stop works. Pedestrian diversions will be required with further details to be communicated.

Laurie Street to Coatfield Lane: hard landscaping works

Following the traffic management flip to the east side of Constitution Street, hard landscaping, OLE and South Leith Parish Church wall works will commence

Baltic Street to Queen Charlotte Street

The fence lines between Maritime / Mitchell Street and south of the Bernard / Baltic junction on Constitution Street were removed. Localised works for the installation of tram infrastructure are continuing.

Lindsay Road / Melrose Drive Residential Development between works sites

Localised works are continuing on the footways at the development between Lindsay Road and Melrose Drive. On completion, the Newhaven tram stop works will commence. Access to properties will be maintained at all times. In addition, the construction of the tram welfare building has started.
