Making our roads safe for South Morningside Primary School petition

Petition statement

The petitioner urgently requests that the Council implement immediate road safety measures around the school to protect children from traffic-related risks. Despite a 20 mph limit, hazards like inadequate signage, double parking, and bypass traffic create unsafe conditions daily for over 500 students.

The petitioner calls for the Council to take the following actions

  1. Enhanced road safety features. Install continental-style crossings and speed bumps on Morningside Drive, Craiglea Drive, and Greenbank Drive, alongside prominent “School Zone” signage to ensure drivers remain alert and reduce speeds.
  2. Increased enforcement during peak times. Position a crossing guard or community warden at critical junctions during drop-off and pick-up hours to deter dangerous driving and manage high traffic volumes safely.
  3. Improved school zone visibility. Add visible “School Zone” signs with flashing lights and clear road markings, similar to those used successfully at other area schools, to clearly designate the area as a child safety zone. Further recommended actions include establishing no-parking zones, installing speed-activated signs, and creating permanent barriers for safe drop-off zones.

Over the long term, the petitioner suggests a redesign of street layouts and automated enforcement measures to sustain a safer environment for children. These measures are intended to reduce traffic dangers around the school and create safer, more accessible routes for all students.
