Creating an accessible PDF

Links

Some assistive technologies can only read out the links on a page. This is why it is essential that we make them accessible so that they can be read correctly by these technologies.

Just like our webpages, links must be understood in isolation and descriptive of where they go.

Avoid

  • using full urls (eg www.edinburgh.gov.uk),
  • links with generic language such as ‘click here’ or ‘read more,
  • using the same link text that go to different locations as this can be confusing for screen readers and misleading.

Words to avoid using in links

Try to avoid using these generic words in your link text
