CCWEL Update April 2022

Following the start of work earlier this year, we’re making good progress on the major new cycling and walking route linking the east and the west of the city centre.

Construction Updates

Section 1 - Roseburn to Haymarket

Roseburn Terrace traffic island

The traffic island opposite Roseburn Gardens has been removed to make way for a new direct crossing.

East bound bus stop at Roseburn Terrace

The bus stop has been relocated to the west of the junction with Murrayfield Gardens and will remain there throughout the coming months. Thereafter it will be replaced with a permanent bus stop on the bridge over the Water of Leith to the East of Murrayfield Avenue.  This will help to improve visibility for those exiting Roseburn Cliff by car and bus users will be separated from the cycle path.

Loading

Work has started on a new cobbled loading bay on Roseburn Street.

While work is underway, the loading bays on Roseburn Terrace are suspended to allow for traffic management and safe access. Loading is permitted from designated areas for drop offs and deliveries to businesses. These are on Roseburn Street, Roseburn Gardens, Murrayfield Place and Wester Coates Terrace and we’ve provided a range of trolleys to help.

In the coming months we will begin to carry out works in the surrounding streets which will include introducing numerous short stay parking spaces in locations including Russell Road, Murrayfield Place and Murrayfield Avenue, ensuring turnover of spaces and availability for people visiting local shops and services.

Roseburn Terrace – excavation work

During recent excavations work we found issues with the structures under the pavement on the south side of Roseburn Terrace. As part of this work, asbestos cement, a low-risk form of asbestos, was discovered. While there was no risk to public health, all appropriate health and safety measures had to be followed.  This caused a slight delay to construction on the southside footway of Roseburn but we redirected teams so we could continue work in the area.  Asbestos removal has been completed and paving on the south side of Roseburn Street has restarted.

Section 2 - Haymarket to Randolph Place

We have been working closely with the team at St Mary’s Cathedral to provide much improved publicly accessible greenspace for visitors and the local community to enjoy.  New footways leading to the cathedral are starting to take shape.

Rosebery Crescent - Road resurfacing underway

Palmerston Place Junction with Grosvenor/Lansdowne Crescents

  • Removal of central island
  • Road resurfacing underway

Manor Place car park

In order to carry out our works on Bishop’s Walk, including resurfacing and side road crossing improvements, we will close the vehicle access from Manor Place to Bishop’s Walk during June this year. During this time, we will provide a vehicle route between the car park and Palmerston Place instead. The exact dates will be communicated to residents in advance.

Section 3 – St Andrew Square to York Place

Work on section three is scheduled to start in June 2022.  We are currently working with colleagues to ensure that our works have minimal disruption on the Bus Station during this time, and to ensure close coordination with works associated with the Trams to Newhaven project.

Open for Business Campaign

We are working with businesses in Roseburn and the community to help minimise disruption and keep people visiting the area. An open for business campaign is underway to let people know about the arrangements during the construction period and encourage them to keep visiting. This includes:

  • social media and online advertising
  • lamppost wraps and signs on key approaches
  • banners on works site barriers
  • advertising and editorial in community magazines and newspapers
  • pavement stencils
  • promotional videos
  • promoting business events and initiatives

We are also keen to work with schools and community organisations to look at ideas and options for activities in the area to support active travel.  Coming soon, we will be launching a competition for local schools to design a poster that would encourage uptake of the route.  A Dr Bike session is also planned in May on the Old Colt Bridge.
