Roseburn and West Coates resurfacing - update

Update on progress of resurfacing in Roseburn and West Coates

We want to take this opportunity to provide an update on the progress of road resurfacing in Roseburn and West Coates, and to confirm the next steps and arrangements.

Phase One

Work started on West Coates on Monday 16 January 2023, when we removed the old road surface, followed by the reinstatement and strengthening of the road base layers. We have also started to construct the new road islands along this section. This phase will continue until Friday 3 February 2023 and will mark the completion of phase one of road resurfacing.

Phase Two

In the second phase we will lay the surface or wearing course of the road. This will start on Sunday 5 February and is expected to be finished by Thursday 9 February 2023. During this phase, we need to use larger equipment to ensure the road is completed to the highest specification. This equipment unfortunately spans across a significant width of the road, and so we will need to close the road during parts of the laying operation. We will use traffic management to control the flow of traffic or to divert traffic around the works. Work will continue at night, with our schedule for phase two as follows:

  • Sunday 5 February: Off-peak work with temporary traffic lights
  • Monday 6 February: Off-peak full closure of the A8 from Murrayfield Avenue to Devon Place.
  • Tuesday 7 February: Off-peak full closure of the A8 from Murrayfield Avenue to Devon Place.
  • Wednesday 8 February: Off-peak full closure of the A8 from Murrayfield Avenue to Devon Place.
  • Thursday 9 February: Off-peak full closure of the A8 from Murrayfield Avenue to Devon Place.

During the work and the full closures, road vehicles will not be permitted to access/egress any side roads and or driveway that adjoins the A8 between the Murrayfield Avenue, and Devon Place (Roseburn Gardens, Roseburn Cliff, Roseburn Street, Balbirnie Place, Wester Coates Terrace, Wester Coates Road, and Stanhope Street). Emergency vehicles will be the only exception to this restriction. During the full closure of the A8, diversions will be in place via Murrayfield Road, Ravelston Dykes, Belford Road, Palmerston Place, and Magdala Crescent. The closure will be from 7pm until 3am.

Phase Three

In phase three we will install new road markings and will start no later than Monday 13 February 2023. We will do this during off-peak times between 7pm and 4am and will be finished by Saturday 25 February 2023. We appreciate that these works will cause disruption, but it is necessary to make sure we can complete the work safely and efficiently. Your continued co-operation is appreciated. If you are directly affected by the work and have any concerns or a specific request, please email us at ccwel@edinburgh.gov.uk. We will assess if we can make any changes to how we are working.

The work is unfortunately susceptible to inclement weather conditions. As such we would recommend checking our website at www.ediburgh.gov.uk/ccwel and #Edintravel for any updates or revisions to the schedule. We have also been liaising with Lothian Buses and would encourage bus users to regularly check for updates via the following channels.
