Emission standards
We are following the minimum emissions standards for virtually all petrol and diesel vehicle classifications that are set out in the Low Emission Zones (Emission Standards, Exemptions and Enforcement) (Scotland) Regulations 2021.
Entry into the LEZ is based on the Euro emission engine classification standards that are used both internationally and nationally. The minimum criteria are
- Euro 4 for petrol cars and vans
- Euro 6 for diesel cars and vans
- Euro 6 for petrol and diesel taxis and private hire vehicles, according to standard licence conditions, as set out in the Taxi Emission Standards Policy (2021)
- Euro VI for buses, coaches and HGVs
All zero emission vehicles, including electric vehicles (EVs), meet the LEZ minimum emission standards.
Check your vehicle
Use Low Emission Zone Scotland's online vehicle checker tool
For UK registered vehicles you may also check your vehicle's emissions with the Vehicle Certification Authority or with your vehicle's manufacturer.
Please note
- The checker does not provide an exemption status
- You cannot check foreign vehicles on the Low Emission Zone Scotland checker. If your vehicle is not registered in the UK, you must make sure it is LEZ compliant to drive in the zone. Contact your national vehicle authorities to confirm compliance status before your journey.
- The data accuracy of the vehicle checker service is always improving. If you think your result is incorrect, you should submit evidence to lowemissionzonesenquiries@gov.scot. Examples of evidence are
- your vehicle's V5C
- certificate of conformity
- letter from the vehicle's manufacturer.
