From local parks and community gardens to Local Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest; from school grounds and hospital grounds to waterways, wetlands and woodlands; we connect people to the green spaces that form a vital part of any healthy, happy community. Our team of dedicated, passionate staff and volunteers work with communities across England, Northern Ireland and Scotland and, through our Community Network, we support local community groups across the UK.
Environment:
Working in a small team of 6 trainees, you will undertake practical outdoors work in managing public green spaces including cutting, clearing, planting, construction tasks and habitat creation especially for nature conservation. This is a part time position, working 21 hours per week Monday to Wednesday.
What might a day in this role look like?
You will meet at the local pick-up-point and travel with your fellow trainees in a minibus to a work site on a local greenspace. You will carry out practical tasks as a team that contribute to managing the greenspace to improve it for nature and for people. At the end of the working day, you will clear the work site, pack up tools into the van, and you’ll be returned to the pick-up point. Your days will vary - some days you might be on training, or you'll be carrying out tool maintenance, but it will follow the same pattern, and you'll know in advance what you will be doing and when.
What will I learn?
- Industry-recognised training/qualifications, including LANTRA Strimmer/Brushcutter and Outdoor First Aid
- Countryside/greenspace management tasks and techniques, especially for nature conservation and infrastructure
- Soft skills: teamwork, problem solving, communication, public engagement
- Employability skills: support in CV writing and interviews, and work placements for experience/networking.
What qualifications/skills are required?
- Enthusiasm for working outdoors
- Enthusiasm for learning and developing skills in countryside/greenspace management and conservation sectors
- Applicants should be aged 16-25 and face barriers to employment (such as, but not limited to economic challenges, lack of qualifications, neurodivergence, mental health issues, care experience, disabilities).
