Contract: Permanent (funding dependent). Probationary period will be six months from commencement of employment, Salary: £12.60 per hour, Closing Date: Wednesday 19 March.

The NEA venue is fully owned by the community it serves and houses a 96-seat theatre, 72-seat café, 6 artist studios, 5 multi-use studios, a music studio, 2 wood workshops, 4 offices, a hot desk mezzanine, third floor greenhouse, and half acre community garden. NEA makes up a third of the MacMillan Hub, and shares an entrance with the Muirhouse Library, the Skills Hub, and the Pennywell Early Years Centre, run by the City of Edinburgh Council.

NEA is a Charity registered in Scotland (SC027700) operated by the staff team working with freelance artists, valued volunteers, and partner organisations. NEA is overseen and supported by a Board of Directors, the majority of whom are local residents.

Environment: 

The Front of House team will be an integral part of the Operations Team within the recently redeveloped North Edinburgh Arts, joining the team at an exciting time of change and growth.  

They will be responsible for delivering excellent public facing service in both the Welcome Desk and Community Café. Ensuring all visitors to NEA receive a warm welcome and an excellent, enjoyable service experience while ensuring maximisation of revenue through several income streams.  

With a passion for all aspects of arts in the community, the role requires an eager and adaptable individual with a creative approach to problem solving and good interpersonal skills.  

What might a day in this role look like?

General Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all visitors to NEA, dealing effectively with all enquiries and ensuring their experience is a warm and positive one while visiting the centre 
  • Working effectively and cooperatively as part of a team, all striving to ensure the expected service standards are adhered to  
  • Effectively and appropriately use systems and follow procedures set out by the Operations Manager 
  • Communicate effectively to all staff, volunteers and service users  
  • Assist with training new and existing staff and volunteers  
  • Adhere at all times to NEA Health & Safety and Emergency procedures and other policies set out in the Staff Handbook  

Welcome Desk Responsibilities: 

  • Dealing with enquiries relating to room hires, office hires, theatre hires, ticket sales and event information  
  • Manage the diary for all room bookings and assist to ensure all events are set up appropriately according to event requirements  
  • Provide administrative support across the organisation at the instruction of the Operations Manager 
  • Organise the execution of ongoing maintenance and service call outs as instructed  
  • Responsible for the running, storage and use of administrative and IT equipment including the photocopier, digital devices and stationery  

Café Responsibilities:  

  • Preparation and service of hot drinks and food to customers in our community café  
  • Replenishing and monitoring stock items  
  • Use of restaurant management software for taking orders and payments  
  • Cash handling and ensuring appropriate checks / paperwork is completed on each shift  
  • Following procedures for opening and closing the café when required  
  • Ensuring the public areas of the café are clean and presentable at all times 
  • Following all food hygiene practices as instructed, including completing all necessary records 

What qualifications/skills are required?

Essential Skills & Knowledge:

  • Experience of working in a public facing setting  
  • Experience of working in a Cafe, Hospitality or similar setting including Barista experience 
  • Passion for excellent, friendly, customer service and participant experience  
  • Office administration experience inc. IT skills and the ability to learn new systems/software 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail and willingness to take accountability 
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment, calm and flexible when working under pressure  
  • Evidence of a positive, proactive and flexible approach 
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Flexible working approach and ability to work on own initiative.

Desirable Experience:

  • First Aid and Health & Safety Training  
  • REHIS Food Hygiene Training  
  • Experience in basic food preparation and food assembly to comply with Food Safety & HACPP
  • Experience of venue ticketing / booking systems
