Teachers guidance
Memberships and registrations
It is a requirement of your post that your registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland must remain current for the duration of your employment. Failure to do this may result in disciplinary action which may lead to the termination of your employment.
Professional Update for General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) registered staff
To maintain their registration, teachers who are fully GTCS registered in Scotland are required to:
- engage in professional learning,
- self-evaluate using the GTC Scotland Professional Standards, and
- maintain a record of professional learning.
In the City of Edinburgh Council, teachers have access to the MYGTCS system to assist with the Professional Update process.
Further information about the requirements of Professional Update can be found on the GTCS website.
Professional Review and Development (PRD)
Every five years confirmation of engagement in the requirements for Professional Update must be endorsed by the teacher and their line manager to maintain full registration. The PRD conversation is an integral part of the process.
Participation in individual review is an entitlement and the responsibility of all teachers. The Professional Review and Development process provides an opportunity for rigorous self-evaluation against the appropriate standard, and reflective dialogue with a line manager about professional learning and practice and mutual identification of next steps.
Membership of a trade union
The Council is associated with other local authorities represented on the national and provincial councils dealing with local authorities' services. You have the right to join a trade union and to take part in its activities and the Council encourages you to do so.
